LENS SETTINGS. Nikon D40 with new 18-55mm lens. Many lenses have no switches or settings. If so, don't worry. If a lens has an "A - M" switch, like the included 18-55mm above, leave it at "A." To get manual focus with the included lens, move it to "M." If the switch says "M/A - M " then use M/A.

Nikon has an 85 f/3.5 macro that fits your camera and does close ups. It is inexpensive and lightweight. Another option is the Tamron 60 f/2 macro. Or the Tamon 90 f/2.8 macro. Both are pretty good for portraiture also. Nikon also has a 60 f2.8 AFS macro, but it is a bit overpriced, I think. However you might find a used or inexpensive copy.
Turn it on and leave it on all the time. Set your camera on S mode (top dial) and set your shutter speed to 1/320 (press the bottom left button on the back of the camera, rotate the thumb dial at the back of the camera, top right side until the number at the top left of your monitor's display reads 320.
