After reading several theads on this forum I decided to investigate the CCV and associated system. I found a technical bulletin (Not BMW) suggesting that proper crankcase vacuum is a method to determine if the CCV is working. The bulletin states that the vacuum should read from 3 to 6 inches of water at idle.
1) I don't think just a bad plug or coil on one cylinder would cause any blue smoke out the exhaust. I wonder if something froze in the oil separator causing it to dump oil in the intake. Disclosure: I replaced the hose from the back of the intake to the oil control valve a few months back but did not use the $95 BMW hose, just made a 1" water
The diaphram in the ccv will be fully open upon startup for a brief second until engine vacuum accumulates in the crankcase, at which point the valve will then close. If your crankcase is not completely sealed with a perfect airtight seal at all gaskets, the ccv WILL open and create a vacuum leak. BMW engineers designed the valve to only open

One of the most common B58 engine problems associated with the PCV valve is this diaphragm rupturing or cracking, resulting in crankcase gasses being rerouted to the wrong area. This can result in oil-rich gasses being pumped into the intake manifold. BMW B58 PCV Valve Failure Symptoms. Smoke coming from the exhaust; Timing issues

I say it "appears" to be there because as you know you can't see much down there. I can see oil grime at that spot but it's impossible to say that connection is to 2. Engine Backfires. If an exhaust valve is bent, it affects how the fumes leave the cylinder. The exhaust valves need to open and close at precise times to ensure the right amount of pressure is always present. A bent exhaust valve can end up in the wrong position. It can also fail to seal properly when closed. U28x8Eu.
